The success of the Badgers in the big three sports (hockey, basketball, football) has been tremendous this year. Wisconsin won 9* games in Football with a brand new coach, ultimately finishing with a two game losing streak in disappointing fashion. The Basketball team has reached the elite eight for the first time since 2005 where they lost to UNC that year. The Hockey team is a #1 seed and about to embark on their tourney run against North Dakota. Already this school year will go down at one of the best for Wisconsin's big three sports ever. But they have the chance to be THE Best.
I'm going to go with more modern times for this argument since its been beaten into me that football was a nothing before Barry (and I'm lazy). I would argue that the 1999-2000 school year was the best for Wisconsin sports. Ron Dayne took the team to another Rose Bowl victory, the Badgers basketball team beat a top Arizona team and marched to the final four, and Wisconsin hockey was a #1 seed facing BC. Wisconsin of course lost in the final four, and Wisconsin lost the first game they played to BC.
Minus The Rose Bowl, the two teams are very similar. Wisconsin will once again face a top seeded Arizona team in the West Region, this time for a chance to go to the final four. Wisconsin hockey is once again a 1 seed preparing for their march to another National title.
Sure, we didn't win a Rose Bowl, but depending on what happens with Basketball and Hockey, this year could catapult itself up to being #1.
Let's all hope it is.
