An Open Letter to Gary Andersen

Wisconsin is a running team. It’s the team’s legacy, identity, and, as of October 5, the Badger’s only chance for success.

Since time immemorial, with the glorious exception of Russell Wilson, Wisconsin quarterbacks have been little more than a source of turnovers, game-long apprehension, and much head shaking. Stave. McEvoy. O’Brien. Stocco. Sorgi. The name on the back of the playcaller’s jersey has served no distinction other than to provide the Badger fan a name with which to associate their outbursts of profane vitriol.

Which renders it seemingly inexplicable that, at this point in the season, finding the team again without strong leadership and competence in the quarterback position—not to mention the complete lack of a wide receiver corps--Gary Andersen abandons the run. A mid-game quarterback change, three interceptions, numerous missed opportunities leads to Northwestern winning despite a career high 259 rushing yards from Melvin Gordon.

Passing on first down? Blasphemy. Passing in the red zone? Sedition. Limiting Gordon’s carries – in direct contravention of the hard lessons learned in the first loss of the game against LSU? High treason against the great state of Wisconsin.

The decisions from the sideline are the reason the Badgers have zero wins against teams anyone has heard of.

Coach Andersen: Melvin Gordon is the best running back in college football. Wisconsin is a running team. Coach like it.
