Wisconsin will face up to three 2013 NCAA tournament teams during its upcoming 2013-14 non-conference slate, as that portion of the schedule was released on Monday. The Badgers will face Gonzaga (27-6 in 2012-13) and Green Bay (29-3), and could also meet Vanderbilt (21-12) at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. In total, seven of Wisconsin's 12 non-conference games will involve 2013 postseason teams.
"We're happy with the schedule since we're always looking to challenge ourselves," head coach Bobbie Kelsey said in a statement. "We're looking forward to playing teams that are comparable to what we've done but also challenge ourselves against teams that have gotten to the post season."
Wisconsin will also face two opponents who competed in the WNIT last season in Marquette (16-16) and Washington (21-12), as well as two Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) programs in Elon (19-14) and Mercer (20-12).
The Badgers' first in-state opponent will be at Milwaukee (9-20), coached by former UW assistant and player Kyle Rechlicz, on Nov. 14. Wisconsin also travels to Marquette on Dec. 7 before the non-confernece finale at home vs. Green Bay on Dec. 30.
Another highlight: the Badgers will return to the Field House for the second straight year when Illinois-Chicago (9-21) comes to Madison on Dec. 21.
"We're excited about the Field House. It reminds us of how far the program has come and to pay homage to those who set the tone for where the program is going to be," Kelsey said. "We always want to respect where the program has been and the people who have given us the opportunity to play in the Kohl Center."
