It's been a roller coaster year for our hockey Badgers this season. Obviously things could not have started much worse for Bucky, starting 1-7-2. Then we went on a tear, losing only one game in December and January.
February was not too shabby either, except for the overtime loss to upstart program Penn State at home. But hey, everyone has a off night every now and then. Even our Badger Hockey Guru Andy doesn't go home with a 10 every night!
Now it's March, and shit's about to get serious. For a team on the bubble for the tourney like we are, shit's especially serious. The question is what team will show up this weekend? Will we get the team that beat top-ranked Minnesota outdoors in Chi-town and ended the regular season with a big win last Saturday against St. Cloud? Or will we get the team that struggles to put the puck in the net, keeps games close that they should be winning and is susceptible to a bad bounce? We will find out this weekend. Below are BVB's keys to advancing to the Final Five in St. Paul.
POWWWWEEERRRR PPPPLLLAAAAYYYYY....POOOWWWWEEERRRR PPLLLLAAAAAYYYYY
Wisconsin is dead last in WCHA with a dismal 12.9% conversion rate. UMD is not afraid to take a penalty (No. 2 in the WCHA). We will need to make them pay this weekend.
RUMPEL MINZE
Need another big weekend out of Joel Rumpel. The sophomore has had a phenomenal season. Everyone knows a hot goaltender can change everything come playoff time. Rumpel has that ability. Also, that picture just made me throw up in my mouth.
Just Score Baby
Offense has been promising lately. No one in the conference is hotter than Michael Mersch right now. Showcased by his coast to coast highlight reel goal from Saturday night. Tyler Barnes also seems to have figured things out the past few weekends. Freshman phenom Nic Kerdiles has been lighting up the score sheet (5 assists the past 4 games). This trend needs to continue. As mentioned earlier, we have been prone to scoring droughts, and this cannot happen now.
Huge weekend for Sconnie Hockey. Attendance at the Kohl Center has been down all year, but it's playoff time and that is unacceptable. Get out there and get loud. We have one of the best home ice advantages in college hockey and lets make sure we use it! Let's send the Dawg's back home with their tails between their legs!
