There's a link at the bottom of this Fan Post to a story that I think every Badger fan needs to read. The tl;dr is that when Coach Andersen was an up-and-coming defensive line coach at Idaho State the head coach fired another one of the assistant coaches. That coach was Andersen's friend and he felt that the coach was fired unfairly. Andersen resigned in protest despite the fact that he had no prospects for another job and a wife at home who was pregnant with twins. Yes, Andersen jeopardized his career and his family's future for loyalty and principle.
Now, this past winter when Bert announced he was leaving for the SEC there were a surprising number of Badger fans who were ecstatic. I never liked the guy personally, but I was shocked with how many people were flat out elated to see him go. People complained about how Bert couldn't win big games, how he couldn't win on the road, how he botched two Rose Bowls and a shot at a National Championship. People complained about how he was no Barry. I don't buy any of that. People looked back at Barry through Rosy colored glasses but Barry had rebuilding phases that would stretch for years. Even in his good years there was always a DERP loss somewhere along the way. We're not Alabama and we're not accustomed to such a level of success that we can be so happy to see a man go because he lost a couple of Rose Bowls. No, we were glad to see Bert leave because he wasn't one of us and everyone knew it. I had friends on the team, as I'm sure we all did, and the stories I heard were that the man was an unadulterated douche. The
stories rumors about him roaming around town shacking up with freshmen didn't really help his cause. The contempt in his voice at his Arkansas introductory press conference for Wisconsin fans who weren't happy with him for losing Rose Bowls was the final confirmation (we won't get into his Twitter wars). The man was a dick hole.
Now here's the kicker: I don't give a damn. I'm not going over to Arkansasfight.com to troll the message boards. I'm not going to write #karma on his wife's twitter feed every time the Razorback's lose. No, I'm not above such things, I just don't hold a grudge. In my mind the man did a great job building this program and then he moved on, and rightfully so. He gave us a team with a sustained level of success and we gave him a springboard to a program that he can make his own and where the fans will actually like him.
What we had was a clean breakup after a somewhat dysfunctional relationship. Yeah, we both got something out of it but we both secretly despised each other while it was happening. You're not going to see any of that with Gary Andersen. If we go to the Rose Bowl the next two years and lose both times you're not going to see anybody calling for his head. If we lose to LSU and Ohio State next year people aren't going to be complaining to everyone who will listen that Gary Andersen can't coach worth a damn and he needs to go. It's not about whether or not GA can make this team elite (and for the record, I think he can). It's about the fact that Andersen belongs. He's all about the family values. He's genuine. He's classy in a way that Bert can never hope to be. The fans love Andersen because he's a True Wisconsin Man, regardless of where he's from. We love him because win or lose, we at least know he did it the right way. Maybe I'm just tired and rambling, but this story made me happy in a way that an 83 point win over the Hoosiers never can. With that said, I would like to formally announce my man crush for Coach Andersen. In all seriousness though, read the article (and FOR FUCK'S SAKE, quit trolling the Arkansas fans and the Bielema's!)
