Rudolph Leaving For Pitt Too
Another one bites the dust.
Joe Rudolph has officially joined Paul Chryst and Bob Bostad at Pitt.
The move suggests Bret Bielema was not going to offer Rudolph the offensive coordinator position at Wisconsin, because this is an otherwise lateral move, although Rudolph is from the Pittsburgh area.
Bielema now only has one remaining offensive coach on his staff: running backs coach Thomas Hammock.
Rudolph also served as Wisconsin's recruiting coordinator and his departure is a huge blow in that regard. It will be very interesting to see if any Badgers verbal commits change their mind before Feb. 1.

The loss of Rudolph hurts the most
Great recruiter. I think BB said he’ll have most of his new staff in place for the last two weeks in January, so I expect there will be a lot of news by next weekend.

If it made sense, it wouldn't be the BCS.
Agreed, this one stinks the most
If Rudy wanted to be an OC, why go to Pitt? Bostad already has it nailed down. Both Del Alexander and Rudolph bolt for their same positions at much lower-profile programs … the fact that each of them get to “go home” somewhat only makes them lateral moves AT BEST.
BB must have a trick up his sleeve to make that proclamation about getting his staff all ready for January just as Rudolph is leaving.
How many recruits change their mind?

I guess this is what comes with success
Hopefully Bielema has a plan for filling in all these empty coaching positions, and hopefully recruits don’t decommit.

Tajh Boyd and Dre' Ellington are the future. Don't count out Sammy Watkins.
Should this be a concern?
Is this an indication of an underlying problem with the head coach?
Any thoughts?

No news is bad news at this point
What I mean by that is we better hear or see something from BB that he has a plan for all of this. If we don’t see him make some moves or announcements within the next week or two, then we’ll know that he didn’t anticipate any of this….and yes, that’ll mean there is an underlying problem. That many coaches don’t leave, especially for lateral moves, unless there is an issue.
I really hate saying this because I have zero issue with what we did with RW, but its like we sold our offensive souls to the devil in 2011 and now we’re playing the price with coaches.

Yes it should be a concern
When your recruiting coordinator jumps ship there is something going on behind the scenes. It could be that these coaches have figured out that Bret has blown many games with poor time management and they don’t want to deal with the incompetence anymore.
No it's not a concern.
If there was a problem with Bielema, then Chryst and Bostad wouldn’t have turned down more money from Texas last year to stay at Wisconsin.
Let’s recap and all get on the same page, OK? Paul Chryst got a promotion. Bostad and Chryst have always been considered a package (like w/ Texas last year) and Bostad was offered a promotion so he left. Huxtable also got a promotion. And Rudolph is very close with both Bostad and Chryst AND he’s from the Pittsburgh area.
ALL of these moves make sense. Let’s not start creating rumors and issues that aren’t true.

Sorry.
Didn’t mean to single you out in that regard. That topic has just circulated enough today that I don’t want it to start becoming one of those myths that people start believing.

Not how the coaching profession works.
Chryst has a new job now and he’s doing a great job hiring a staff at Pitt. Have to look at it from that angle. Sucks for Wisconsin, but that’s how it works.

Bullshit.
He just emptied our entire staff. What a dick.

Yes!
Dave Doren didn’t do this when he left and he still won a conference championship his first year at NIU. Im not concerned so much about loosing the coaches- I believe Bret can find decent replacements, but I am concerned about the lack of stability causing some of our recruits to de-commit. This recruiting class is one of our best. This is going to hurt our standing in the hierarchy of college football and in the eyes of the recruits at least in the short term. This is where we could have used a Rose Bowl win, and I say bullshit on Oregon needing the win more than us, they are already a national power.

Methinks Bielema must be doing something or not doing something the other coaches don't like. I don't know what other explanation there could be.

If BB was doing something they didn't like
Why would they stay for 4 or 5 years? Why stick around that long if he’s so bad to work for?
Every coach that has left has left for a promotion, or to go coach somewhere where they’d be more at home.

Some of these guys left for lateral moves, right?
Why leave for a lateral position?

It could be something that Bret recently started/stopped doing that irked them
I think BB probably stopped coming to Poker ‘n’ Wings night now that he’s engaged and it hurt everyone else’s feeelings…

one more question
Couldn’t they have limited the number of assistants that Chryst could poach? I know they can in my business

Well, here's the big question
Did Bielema offer the OC position to either Bostad or Rudolph? If he did, then there is decent reason to wonder why neither of them stayed at UW.
This is also one of those things that also stays quiet within the coaching fraternity. We may never know the answer. My guess is that neither one got an offer, otherwise, I think both (especially Rudolph) would have stayed.
To answer your question though, offering a promotion or a raise is really the only way Bielema could have kept them. Doesn’t seem like either was offered.

And you'd think BB would rather let them walk
Than give them a promotion or a raise he didn’t think they were ready for. Maybe he thought Rudolph needed more seasoning.

Chryst was a loss
But it was predictable, and I figured we could move on from him without anything catastrophic happening. When Bostad went, it was a bit of surprise and definitely hurts — OL is the team’s calling card and Bostad is a great coach. But we still had Rudolph, and I figured he could do good things with the OL. Now Rudolph… Panic beginning to set in. WTF is Bielema doing over there? Desperately hoping he has a grand master plan, but am suspecting that is not the case.
I'm getting fonder and fonder of the idea of offering to bring in Nate Tice as a minor offensive coach.
Pretty soon, he’ll be the only person on staff who has ever met anyone on the roster.
