Greetings from the Rose Bowl, as the Wisconsin Badgers get ready to take on the Oregon Ducks in the 98th-annual Rose Bowl game. It should be an excellent game - a matchup of two conference winners, both of whom feel like they could have been playing for something more this season. This is also the 43rd time the Rose Bowl Game features two teams ranked in the Top 10 nationally. We've been talking about it for at least a month, and it's finally time to get started.

Do you really need any more explanation? It's the Granddaddy of Them All, after all. Hit the jump to get started.

Interesting

There have been 42 matchups between teams ranked in the top 10 in the Rose Bowl. The lower-ranked team has won 21 of those.

Probably covered ad naseum somewhere...Does anyone know the answer to this...Home vs. Visitor Jerseys at the Rose Bowl

I know it probably has to do with the BCS or who is considered the home team. In the Pac-8/10 vs. Big10 days, the Conferences alternated home jerseys. Last year Wisconsin wore white jerseys and TCU wore black. Again this year, UW is wearing white jerseys. ??

and compare them to the last four on D. D stepped up. O shat the bed. BIG time.

by MDrew on Jan 2, 2012 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

The reality is that the O scored 38, the D allowed 45. Both of those are big numbers. That’s bad for one unit, good for the other.

Over the Monster -- SB Nation's Resident Red Sox Site

by Ben Buchanan on Jan 2, 2012 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, the offense scored 31 & OUR D scored 7.

But yeah, our defense isn’t that good. Ee knew that. You’re just saying they’re not as good as you want them to be – all season. And they’re not that much better today Obviously we all agree. But given what we knew them to be, they actually stepped up and gave us what we needed in the 4th quarter, and the offense literally dropped the ball, or threw it to the wrong team, at which point you do have to start giving the D a few considerations. They also took the ball away twice. But not at as timely moments as when the O gave it away.

And it wouldn't have been any easier to get a snap off before the clock hit 0 with a play called.

Probably harder, in fact. The real problem is that there were only 2 seconds left, and there’s only 1 guy responsible for that.

This coaching staff makes some astonishingly bad decisions.

You know that came from the sideline.

I don't know

I think it was more of an awesome play by the defender. He gambled by throwing out some bait, Wilson bit, and he made the play. If he messes up there, he gives up a huge play, but that’s why it’s a gamble.

Just wasn't meant to be.

You kind of had to know it when that Abby fumble impossibly stayed in bounds. Good season, just not good enough. We’ve got to turn the corner sometime.

Not meant to be

In the same way that nothing seems meant to be for the Badgers?

Ohio State last year…That’s all I’ve got.

Screw that.

This loss had more to do with Bilema’s limitations than it did fate, luck, or whatever you want to call it.

Bret Bilema is thrilled to be picking up another "Participant" ribbon for Wisconsin.

He’s not a bad coach/program runner, he’s just not good enough to take the Badgers where they’re capable of going.

They primarily lost this game because of a relative lack of athleticism (which is part of BB’s problem), but BB’s incredibly bad game management robbed these kids of a chance at the end of the game.

He’s just not good enough. Unfortunately, Alvarez will never admit that, because he’s always been satisfied by playing in a bowl game every year.

I have to be honest I am happy they did not embarrass themselves

I have no faith in the Boy Wonder Coach in a big game on the road so I did not think they would win.

Kills me they did not but it does not surprise me imagine what this team could have done with a better defense you score 38 you should win.

I totally agree that Bret is not the guy to take us to that next level but we are going to be stuck with him because he is Barry’s boy

Bummer of a way to end it

But great job on giving Oregon a hell of a game. That fumble was freaking magical to stay in bounds.

If we assume the field goal was good,

it ends up being -4 points for the Badgers, as the Ducks scored. Liked it at the time, but in hindsight, it’s huge.

down 4 we still need a TD. I'm not sure what's so different.

Tho yes, a TD wins it. But that didn’t end up being our problem. If we get those 7 then, it’s tied.

by MDrew on Jan 2, 2012 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

That kind of analysis doesn't work.

You can’t just look at the point differential and say that a FG in the 2nd quarter wouldn’t have mattered. Points effect the way the game is called by the coaches, both in play selection and strategic choices (like Bilema’s TO usage, and Oregon’s sudden slow down on its penultimate possession). The point being, in my opinion anyway, that it was clear by the time BB made that decision that they’d need to score on virtually every possession just to stay in the game. He was aware of that, apparently, because he went for it on 4th on the apparent impression that they needed to score 6 on every possession.

But even in shootouts like these, that’s almost never the case. Sooner or later even the best offenses screw up, a fact that was born out by Wisconsin’s defensive touchdown (which dramatically reduced the impact of the decision to forego a field goal moments earlier) just a few minutes later. The point is he got caught up in the emotion of the moment and didn’t make the smart decision: take the freaking points.

But that was just one in a series of poor strategic and game management decisions, not to mention his basic misunderstanding of the rules. Here are a few:

- going for it on 4th and giving up the chance at the FG in the first half.
- his lack of understanding that when a runner’s forward progress is stopped in bounds, the clock doesn’t stop ticking; costing Wisconsin 13 seconds in playing time in a half that ended with Wisconsin in possession of the ball on its own 40.
- his failure to realize that the clock was still running after the play mentioned above, resulting in the clock running for 13 seconds between the end of the play and his finally getting the time out called.
- his failure to understand that a touchback becomes impossible only if the ball fully crosses the goal line, and not just when a players foot touches the goal line;
- his failure to understand that even if the rule hinged on the players contact with the goal line, it’s a play that can’t be reviewed or reversed;
- his decision to use a time out, compounding the damage done by his lack of understanding, which ended up costing the Badgers a final opportunity to tie the game in the 4th.

And those are just the moments that are obvious to the fans. There are almost certainly more.

Against MSU

he “took the points,” but the points didn’t actually end up on the scoreboard. They’re not free. You have to make the kick, and there is a nonzero chance of not.

I agree with a lot of your criticisms; we were just talking about that one decision. Overnight, I’ve come around more to your view, just because at the end, if you’re down just four, the TD is just a win. But you don’t know that then. It’s a reasonable decision to try to get the 6 in that kind of game. It’s not egregious; it’s a tough call. What looks bad to me is making the call if you don’t feel okay about getting it on the ground with Montee Ball. The roll-out they called was way too low-percentage; any pass was.

Can we offer Nate Tice a low-level coaching job for next year?

He has coaching in his blood, he’s been an unpaid coach on the sidelines anyways, and we know he isn’t going pro. We’re sure to be losing a lot of our offensive staff anyways, so I think the timing on it would make sense too.

Well that sucked

I stepped away to have some dinner during the fourth quarter. To make the loss extra sucky, I inhaled a hot pepper from my soup into my sinuses at the same time of the fumble. I don’t recommend.

Sorry it had to end that way for you guys. I would say “Hope to see you next year”, but I don’t want to offend you if you guys are hoping for a BCS championship game next year.

Also, wow, I didn’t realize Ben Buchanan was a Wisconsin fan. Now I feel bad…

You guys played us hard!

Coming to this level and just falling short is rough (trust us Ducks) but there were many times in the game I was contemplating how to deal with 3 BCS loses in a row. I hope you guys win the Big-10 again and make another run at the Roses.
