LIVE GAME THREAD: Northwestern at Wisconsin

Northwestern Wildcats at Wisconsin Badgers, Jan 18, 2012 8:00 PM CST

Big Ten Men's Basketball

Northwestern at Wisconsin

vs

12-5 (2-3 Big Ten)
14-5 (3-3 Big Ten)

Jan. 18, 2012 8:00 PM CT

Kohl Center (17,230), Madison, WI

TV: BTN (Eric Collins & Shon Morris)

Radio: 1310 AM (Matt Lepay, Mike Lucas)

All-time Series: Wisconsin leads 108-61

Last Meeting: Wisconsin won, 78-63 in Madison

MADISON - Greetings from the Kohl Center, where the Badgers will try and extend their winning streak to three games against the Wildcats of Northwestern. If Wisconsin is successful, it will head into a crucial showdown with Illinois on Sunday with a conference record above .500.

While four of the Badgers' five losses on the season have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 16 of either poll, the team's performance against Nebraska last weekend left a lot to be desired. Another half shooting 6-of-28 from the floor won't cut it against a Northwestern team that knocked off Michigan State last week.

Despite UW's offensive struggles, its defense has been consistently stellar. The Badgers lead the nation in allowing just 48.5 points per game.

The Wildcats have never won at the Kohl Center. Could that streak come to an end tonight?

As always, your comments, questions and predictions are welcome. We'll be here all game long.

Jordan Taylor has been draining 3s in warmups so far

Not sure why Ryan Evans keeps taking 3s, though.

The slate of 5 winter break home games mercifully comes to an end tonight.

Looking forward to a nice, big student section and raucous environment next Thursday night when Indiana invades the Kohl Center.

We are past due for one!

Our only opportunities at home so far have been vs. Marquette (no band and many fans in Indy for a pretty important football game) and vs. MSU (no band and many fans in Pasadena for a pretty important football game).

Keep an eye on this Indiana-Nebraska game wrapping up in the next few minutes

If IU loses, that’s 3 losses in a row, which would drop Tom Crean’s squad below .500 in Big Ten play.

Watching it right now.

Win or lose, the last three games have been a big reality check for the Hoosiers.

Bucky's 5th Quarter. SB Nation's Wisconsin Badgers community.

Let's see if Ben Brust can get the 3-ball going tonight

He is just 10-of-38 from beyond the arc since going 7-for-7 vs. UNLV

The next few games will tell us a lot about the Badgers

Their only really bad loss has been to Iowa at home….

But their best wins are @ Purdue and vs. UNLV.

Hype is a funny thing....

If Wisconsin takes care of business at home tonight, it is ahead of IU in the Big Ten standings.

A late arriving crowd tonight

The Athletic Department implemented additional security measures (metal detecting wands, etc.) in response to the concealed carry law – I believe that was to begin tonight.

I didn't get wanded last night

Heard they cancelled the extra security measures, which is good since it was kinda silly.

When the 3s are falling...

Berggren, Bruesewitz and Gasser, one after the other. 9-2 Wisconsin.

The last two possessions, the Badgers have had to take desperation shots at the end of the clock

One went in, the other didn’t. NU starting to heat up with their shooting.

It's the Badgers' D that's been suspect tonight

Northwestern has gone 6-of-10 from the floor and has 18 points just 7 minutes in

Bruesewitz is having a game...

Double-digit scoring for the second time in his last three games, and only the fourth time all season… If he can start contributing offensively, look out.

The fans are doing their part to get some energy going.
It would be nice to end this half with more points on the board.

A nice bit of defense by Wisconsin.

Not the way NU head coach Bill Carmody wanted to end the half

His team unable to get one last shot off before the buzzer.

Mike Bruesewitz leads the Badgers in scoring with 12 points.

Jordan Taylor held to just 3.

Wisconsin is going to have to do more to assert themselves in the second half.

by bjbruno on Jan 18, 2012 8:51 PM CST reply actions

This is not your typical Northwestern team...

These guys beat Michigan State, took Michigan to overtime and lost by one to Illinois.

The Badgers shot 46.2 percent from the floor and went 5-of-10 from 3 in the first half, so that is an improvement over the past couple games.

That's great to hear

I’m stuck watching Portland-Atlanta or Texas-K-State at a bar in MN, neither of which interest me.

As soon as I finish this beer...

I’m heading back to the hotel. If they don’t have BTN at least I can follow on my laptop. Also, my buddy in Fitchburg is sending me semi-coherent text updates.

Stingy D from the Badgers here in the 2nd half

They’ve given up just 11 points so far.

Taylor now in one of those grooves where he just can't miss

15 points on the night, 12 of which have come in the first 10 minutes of this second half.

Gotta love to see the confidence growing for Ryan Evans

He is arguably the most improved Badger from his first day on campus.

The D has been great all year

If the Badgers can shoot like this with any consistency, they will be a tough out.

Final Score:
