Hey, remember when I wrote a while ago that Wisconsin quarterback Curt Phillips might challenge Jon Budmayr for the starting quarterback job? Yeah, never mind that.
The oft-injured redshirt junior suffered another setback to his right knee yesterday, and head coach Bret Bielema said Phillips will undergo surgery today to find the exact cause of the problem. This will be Phillips' third surgery in 13 months (!), but Bielema said the team expects him to be back in June. According to Mulhern, he might not be able to return to contact drills until the start of fall camp.
That timeline seems rather optimistic to me, and I don't think it would be a good idea for the Badgers to count on Phillips being ready for the fall. Phillips' new setback virtually assures that Budmayr will be the Badgers' starting quarterback in 2011, and that either redshirt freshman Joe Brennan or true freshman Joel Stave will be the second string signal caller.
