QB Free Agency for Wisconsin again?

So I was reading my SBN Utah Utes blog and came across this article. Looks like Wisco is competing in the 'free agent' market again this year! I was wondering if anybody has heard anything else about this? What is our QB situation looking like for next year in terms of guys already on our squad and incoming recruits? Is Dayne Crist somebody we'd really go after with all of his injuries? He's no Russell Wilson that's for sure. Would he even want to come to Wisconsin with us losing 21 seniors (15 of which are starters) this year?

FYI: I've been a life long Utes fan from growing up in Salt Lake City, but I graduated from UW-Madison a few years ago. I gotta say I'm conflicted on who to root for with this --as with a likely Utah vs Wisconsin rose bowl in the near future-- but in the end I need to go with my alma mater!

Its not free agency

It’s completely within the rules. Nebraska and MSU have JUCO kids up and down the roster, most of whom were too stupid to get into a 4 year college out of high school because of SAT scores in the triple-digits.

If montee ball comes back and konz comes back I think Crist should be welcomed to come compete, otherwise let a young QB develop.

I wouldn't mind him coming in to compete

Our QB situation looks very shaky next season. Budmayr has never impressed, is physically limited (only 6’ and not that mobile) and missed this entire season. Houston is a 4-star recruit but as a true freshman he’ll probably struggle some. Phillips is unknown but he’s had like 3 ACL tears so I wouldn’t put my chips in for him. Brennan looks like he struggles alot with him accuracy but he’s physically gifted so has a chance.

So Crist could come in, but nobody’s guaranteeing him the starting gig like Wilson was guaranteed.

Montee Ball for Heisman.

I'm aware its not actually free agency...

I just think it’s funny to call it that. I think it’s a fair rule and it actually rewards students for being STUDENTS who graduate on time. And I’m definitely glad it exists— see: Wilson, Russell.

I'm sure Crist would be welcome to try out

Phillips is applying for a medical hardship waiver, so he could have up to 2 years of eligibility left. Budmayr will have 2 years as well, unless he applied for medical hardship too.

Brennan will have sophomore status, so there’s another one of those class gaps that Wilson filled by transferring.

Ugh.

I know the screaming from ND fans would be legendary, but I don’t want Crist.

Any particular reason why?

With that name, wouldn't he be perfect for Wisconsin?

Especially if the O.C. stays.

Is his middle name Alvarez or Richter?

All the shaky performances at ND.

There’s a reason the guy got benched. I’m convinced the kid is Allan Evridge’s long-lost cousin.

I'd rather focus on recruiting.

Let’s recruit the next Russell. Crist is no Russell Wilson.

Very few people are.

I’m in favor of the Badgers getting more talent. Ideally, on the D-Line. But anyway, Crist was highly rated before going to the skullfuck at South Bend. I call him worth a flyer.

I just want to watch the world burn.

Here's the rub

I haven’t seen him play very much at all, so I would say it’s a good idea as long as he’s not anointed as the starter.

Russell Wilson is miles better than any of the Badgers’ other available quarterbacks, but without seeing Crist I can’t say he’s that much better than, say, Curt Phillips.

Might as well try it

Best case scenario he comes in and is Russell Wilson version 2. Worst case is he’s Allen Everidge, they lost 1 scholarship for next year and the QB situation is exactly the same as it would have been without him. My guess is he’s going to be somewhere in between but with the talent and physical tools there is a good chance he’d end up being the best QB on the roster next year.

As long as they’re willing to pull him for Phillips or one of the younger guys if they’re producing better than Crist I’d say it’s worth the risk. At least pursue the opportunity, if it pans out using the scholarship on him is more valuable than using it on some incoming 2 or 3 star DB.

Ok, I looked a little closer at the QB depth chart

If Budmayr and Phillips both apply for medical hardship for missing this year, then the depth chart looks like this:

Curt Phillips: RS Junior
Jon Budmayr: RS Sophomore
Joe Brennan: RS Sophomore
Joel Stave: RS Freshman
Bart Houston: Freshman

But, we can’t say for sure that Phillips and Budmayr will be able to play next year. There really haven’t been any updates on Jon’s condition since early in the season. So if you take those top two out of the equation, it looks like this:

Joe Brennan: RS Sophomore
Joel Stave: RS Freshman
Bart Houston: Freshman

Essentially, that’s the situation the Badgers found themselves in before Russell’s transfer, and pre-Budmayr’s injury. In this case it makes sense to bring in Crist, because there’s another big hole at the top of the depth chart.

Utes in Rose Bowl?

How in the hell do you think the Utes would ever qualify for the Rose bowl? It is a piece of shit school, with a piece of shit head coach and a piece of shit team.

Utes in the Rose Bowl

The odds of that are like a 6-6 team making it to the Pac-12 Championship game and being 1 win away from being in the Rose Bowl themselves.

I can’t think of any year where a scenario like that would happen though.
