Welcome into our live game thread from Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. It's Senior Day for the Illini and it also happens to be Unofficial St. Patrick's weekend on campus so the students here will either be extremely hungover or still drunk. Either way, the Orange Krush will likely muster up enough energy to make this a tough environment for the Badgers this afternoon.

The Illini have lost four of their last five games and as a result, today's game turns out to be the biggest game of their season. To get into the NCAA Tournament, Illinois will likely have to beat Wisconsin at least once this week as the two will likely meet again Friday in Indianapolis.

For a complete list of what is at stake today, as well as the keys to the game and my prediction, check out our game preview.

For now, feel free to leave your comments and predictions below. We'll have complete coverage all afternoon!

Injury note

Mike Tisdale was dealing with sore achilles tendon this week and was wearing a walking boot as recently as Friday, but he is expected to be good to go today.

How’s the Orange Crush look for an early Sunday afternoon game after Unofficial?

Well the courtside students are here and ready to go.

Little quiet during the senior ceremonies though.

The good news is that the press seats at Assembly Hall are courtside.

The bad news is that there are three rows of press in front of me.

The even better news is that the Badger Herald and Daily Cardinal didn't show up.

Which means I just got upgraded to first class.

Yeah the seats at the Big Ten Tournament are just as good.

And two years ago Bo got T’d up twice in two days. It’s always fun to ACTUALLY here what they saw when they get T’d up.

Very nice move by Hughes.

Sort of a slow, deceptive drive.

Well UW has a matchup advantage when Weber goes with 3 bigs against UW's 3 guards.

Cole is forced to guard either Pop, J-Bo or Taylor and it’s hurting Illinois early.

Wow that was a weak foul call on Leuer.

Happened right in front of me. He nicked Tisdale’s hand about a second after he released the ball. Had absolutely no effect on the shot.

Lavin picked Matta on-air in the first half.

I’d say either pick is defensible — but I’m biased, so I’d definitely go with Bo.

by Cheeseandcorn on Mar 7, 2010 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Thoughts

Matta had the best team, especially when Turner is healthy. Ryan took a team predicted to finish 9th to the Top 25 most of the season. It’s tough not to be biased.

That was a frustration foul.

He got fouled by DJ Richie on the possession before, but there was no call. He gave Jim Burr a deathly stare and then missed a layup.

Taylor and Nankivil did a poor job of communicating on defense and few seconds later and Hughes just went down the court and hacked Tisdale downlow.

Illinois fans are some of the dumbest fans this conference has.

Every time a ball gets knocked out of one of their players’ hands, they think it is a foul. And they were screaming for a travel on Hughes there, even though that is not a travel as long as he goes up for a shot, which he did. That was the patented Alando Tucker move right there.

Illinois bugs me in general. For some reason there team just annoys me, but I can’t really point out why.

by wisco87 on Mar 7, 2010 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Five years ago, I would’ve screamed for a travel anytime the other team did that. But by now, you just have to know they don’t call that a travel anymore. Like, ever.

by wisco87 on Mar 7, 2010 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

Does anyone have a +/- for Hughes this season?

It feels like the Badgers have had a handful of games this season where he’s missed extensive time and they’ve been better without him. Wondering if that’s true, or it just feels that way to me.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 7, 2010 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

Bo not happy that Hughes didn't get back on defense.

Yeah the feet got tangled, but he had a good point that if Hughes had already been down there it wouldn’t have happened.

Will be able to return today.

by swenny916 on Mar 7, 2010 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

I know a lot of people think he's very talented, which is why I noted it as an unpopular opinion.

I just think he’s a strong Ewing Effect candidate. In some of the biggest meltdowns and shortfalls of the season, he’s the guy taking terrible shots and making poor decisions.

I might be wrong (basketball is, after all, my second sport) but I think a year from now we’ll be talking about how great Jordan Taylor has been in his place.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 7, 2010 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

He's a player

were is highs are really high, but his lows can get get pretty low. I look at his progession over the last few years though and its pretty great. I was always wary of him frosh and soph years, but he has really grown over the last yeear.

by wisco87 on Mar 7, 2010 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I’m not saying he’s terrible. He could be a phenomenal player if he could keep himself in check a little more and improve his decision making.

But I do think, because of said lapses in decision making and emotions, that this team might be better off with Jordan Taylor, who’s a little steadier, running the point.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by wiarchaeologist on Mar 7, 2010 2:50 PM CST reply actions

He came in a little bit in the first half.

Missed a layup. Sometimes that’s enough to sit on the bench.

I'd be interested in seeing a study of this

Because it seems like the bench rotation changes game to game, and severely so. Rob Wilson, Bruesewitz, Berggren, Evans and Jarmusz all seem to be 20 minute guys one game and completely absent the next.
