Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren is leaving Wisconsin to become the head coach at Northern Illinois, replacing the now-Gophers head coach Jerry Kill. Can't say I'm surprised at the hiring. More details to come later...

Update, 9:02 AM CT: Doeren will still coach Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Wisconsin vs. Northern Illinois at Soldier Field in Chicago just got a little more interesting.

Curse Minnesota

Their hiring of Kill led to this decision.

Not to say Miami of Ohio wouldn’t have hired Doeren had Minnesota hired Haygood. Just saying that Minnesota ultimately has us down one great defensive coordinator.

I think Chryst may hold the OC job for the rest of his life. The man’s a(n evil) genius.

Glad he's still coaching the bowl game.

That’s important. Here’s hoping Chryst doesn’t leave.

Are there anymore jobs open that Chryst could take?

I do wonder who leaves the Wisconsin staff and follows Doeren to NIU. Could see Ash leaving if given the Defensive Coordinator position.

I think Cryst is a bigger name than Doeren.

And one wouldn’t follow the other, that just seems weird.

Oh yeah, no doubt about it

I don’t think Chryst takes the NIU head coach job if he was offered, he turned down the Purdue job a few years ago. Can’t seem him settling for a lesser job than that, at least for the next few years.

Man I forgot about that.

Good point. There’s our benchmark then, right? No lower than Purdue.

Considering Purdue's record of late

Ohio State would have to fire Jim Tressel and make an offer to Paul Chryst to make him bolt.

Do you see that happening? No. The Buckeyes would have to go through an 08 Washington season for Tressel to get axed. I don’t see that happening with the talent they have.

Who should replace Doeren?

I don’t begrudge him at all for taking the NIU job, but I’m curious to see if we’ll promote from within or go with an outside hire.

The prohibitive favorite is Defensive Line Coach Charlie Partridge

Everything I’ve read points to the Badgers promoting from within, and Partridge is the most reasonable candidate.
