OLA PA'ANI LOPI: Wisconsin vs. Arizona

Arizona Wildcats at Wisconsin Badgers, Nov 23, 2009 10:59 PM CST

Maui Invitational First Round: Wisconsin vs. Arizona

Tip-off: 11 p.m. CT (7 p.m. Hawaiian Time)

Location: Lahaina Civic Center, Lahaina, Hawaii

 TV: ESPN2

Radio: Badgers Radio Network

Opposing Blog: Arizona Desert Swarm

Coverage: Check out our Wisconsin-Arizona Game Page

Ola Pa'ani Lopi. We think that means Live Game Thread. At least that's what this Hawaiian-English Dictionary says. Anyway, that's what this is -- our live game thread for tonight's late-night clash between Wisconsin and Arizona in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Here's what you need to know about the Wildcats:

Sean Miller is in his first year as head coach at Arizona after five ridiculously successful seasons at Xavier -- yes, the team that ousted the Badgers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in March. Miller was an assistant at Wisconsin during the 1992-93 season and one his student managers that year was James Whitford, who graduated from UW-Madison in 1994 and joined Miller's coaching staff at Xavier in 2005. He migrated with Miller to Arizona this season.

While Arizona's coaching staff might be familar with this Badgers' team, his players aren't. They also happen to be really young. Nic Wise, Arizona's best player, is the team's lone senior while fellow returning starter Jamelle Horne is the only junior on the team. As a result, the Wildcats' streak of 25 straight NCAA Tournament berths is in jeopardy this season, but it won't be if a talented recruiting class contributes immediately.

After Tim Floyd was forced out of USC, Sean Miller swooped in and alertly grabbed a couple of recruits who were released from their letters of intent at Southern Cal. The end result was Rivals.com's No. 12-ranked recruiting class -- impressive when you consider Miller was hired April 7.

The freshman you want to watch is 6'6 small forward Soloman Hill who is averaging 15 points in his first two games. Also watch out for 6'10 center Kyryl Natyazhko, 6'7 forward Derrick Williams and the speedy 5'11 Lamont "Momo" Jones -- all freshman.

We'll be here all night (and morning) long. The Badgers are four point favorites but this promises to be a good game. The winner faces Gonzaga tomorrow.

I didn’t stay up this late to watch texas finish off a 20+ point win.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Good thing I randomly came here at midnight.

I would not have known this game was today otherwise. I saw 11/24 on ESPN and didn’t figure on Hawai’i time.

Still showing the 18 point Texas-Iowa game right now. =\

Well, good thing we got to watch the end of that game.

Wouldn’t want to risk missing a 3-minute, 20-point comeback to watch the first minute of this game.

Oh well, 2-0 Badgers. Let’s go!

good effort by nankivil

Shame it was wasted.

Need Jon Leuer to make those shots

AZ is long and athletic. We need to hit outside shots and REBOUND!

Quick 7-0 lead.

Nankivil is really active on the boards so far. He caused that turnover.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:14 PM CST reply actions

Great play by Hughes!

I wonder if Bo Ryan ever played any Catcher. He certainly knows the stance.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:16 PM CST reply actions

5 minutes of shutout ball.

Called by Bo Ryan. >_>

Fun Maui fact: Maui was once conquered by the first king of Hawai’i—King Kamehameha I.

Nostalgic name, that.

Leuer and Nankivil both with two fouls... not good

Whistles very tight early… both ways

Fould trouble a big issue right now...

Leuer, Nankivil and Evans all out until halftime with 2 fouls. Mike Bruesewitz looking good early. Here’s to hoping he proves me wrong about redshirting

Third foul on Evans

Wisconsin is finding out it’s pretty hard to run the swing offense without Leuer and Nankivil in the game. As a result UW is taking bad shots and Arizona is getting back in the game.

by Adam Hoge on Nov 23, 2009 11:38 PM CST reply actions

Shots aren't coming as a result of the offense at all.

They get the ball to someone, and then 3 or 4 seconds of standing around later he shoots a contested jumpshot.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Uh oh. That's 3 on Nankivil really early on.

Arizona is causing all sorts of havoc on inbounds passes.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:43 PM CST reply actions

That's Nankivil's third foul

Called by the sideline official behind the 3-pt line. That can’t happen. Fouls are not even.

by Adam Hoge on Nov 23, 2009 11:43 PM CST reply actions

Wisconsin has 10 fouls, Arizona has 5

Officials are not calling it even and that’s the difference in the score.

Interesting decisions by Bo

He almost never lets any of his players with two fouls keep playing the first half. Tonight, he put Nankivil, Evans and Leuer back in there and now all three of them have three fouls.

by Adam Hoge on Nov 23, 2009 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

I think he saw things going bad in a hurry.

Put them back in to jump start the offense again and hope the reserves can keep the momentum going. Hopefully they can build a big enough lead that them fouling out halfway through the 2nd half won’t be an issue.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:51 PM CST up reply actions

J-Bo for 3!

Bruesewitz—who is in dire need of an easily thought up nickname—takes the charge. He’s doing everything tonight.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:48 PM CST reply actions

Hughes gets something inside.

Arizona is basically making Wisconsin feed the ball to the sideline in every inbounds play and then instantly trapping. I’d like to see Bo try and make them pay for that predictability.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:53 PM CST reply actions

The officials are awful!

They don’t call the travel on the drive, and then call a foul on the clean block.

Oi.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:54 PM CST reply actions

Another one

Seriously, LeBron James would get called for some of these walks.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 23, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Wow these are some phantom fouls

Thank goodness they can’t shoot free throws

Arizona is 12-of-19 from the FT line while Wisconsin is 2-for-5

Nankivil, Leuer and Evans all have three fouls. Natyazhko has three for AZ, while Wise and Fogg have two.

Well no matter what effect it has on the outcome on the game, the officials have officially taken the fun out of watching the game.

If there is anyone who isn’t a Wisconsin or Arizona fan still watching this crap then God bless them.

I’ve been watching and following here. Too tired to type. Impressed that some ET zone fans are here.

Hughes made the 3

Now he needs to make free throws.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 24, 2009 1:09 AM CST reply actions

If Wisconsin loses, they will look at those last three empty possessions

Went from a 3-pt lead to a one pt deficit and AZ has the ball.

Debatable

It’s hard to say anyone had a good anything. The refs took over this game early and haven’t let go.

Ah.

Was just looking at the Yahoo Sports scores. Badgers had a 31-23 lead at half.

Is this an Arizona team of old or one that is rebuilding?

And that was wild 3 pointer. >.<
